The house Ritter St. Georg dates from 1489 and is one of the oldest and most important preserved half-timbered houses in the city of Braunschweig . It is located in the old town at Alte Kniehauerstraße 13, at the corner of Petersilienstraße 1. Today it is one of the few half-timbered houses in the city that survived the Second World War - albeit damaged.

History and architecture

The 14 span long house or its stone predecessor probably dates back to the 13th century and was rebuilt several times by Hans Haverland, councilor, chamberlain and mayor in 1489 and by other owners in the following centuries. The date 1489 results from an inscription in the sill beam of the house. 15 of the studs above the ground floor show elaborate figural carvings, e.g. B. Saint George , who gave the house its name , Christophorus as a helper in need , a grimace to ward off evil and many other depictions of saints. Around 1700 the building received an additional upper floor and a roof with a gable and two roof houses. The baroque hall gate also dates from this period . While the protrusion on the original 1st floor is still strong, the transition to the younger 2nd floor shows only a flat relief. A baroque staircase and parts of the original stone floor have been preserved in the house. The ceiling paintings from the 17th century, which were rediscovered as part of renovations, are among the oldest in a Lower Saxon town house. In addition, there is also a piece of old city wall in the house and in the courtyard an old well and a cistern from the 13th century. However , the windows on the ground floor, designed in the Gothic style , date from 1860.

After the war damage from the bombing of the Second World War had been repaired, the middle section of the house was used as a residential building from the 1950s to the 1980s. In the right part was the well-known corner pub "Ritter St. Georg"; in the left the restaurant "Altes Haus". After the renovation, the “Ritter St. Georg” restaurant was opened in the basement of the former corner pub on November 29, 1983, and the hotel of the same name opened six months later on the upper floors and in the backyard.

Historic neighborhood

The building is located in one of the oldest settlement areas in the city, the old town. Together with some neighboring buildings, it is now one of the most beautiful architectural ensembles in the city center. From 1875 until its final destruction by the National Socialists in December 1940, the New Synagogue was only a few meters across from the “Ritter” .
