Knight Academy (Ettal)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Benedictine Knight Academy in Ettal Abbey existed from 1711 to 1744. The Knight Academy was an educational institution for the sons of noble families, but also for citizens' sons.

history

Ettal Abbey was founded by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian on April 28, 1330, the day of Saint Vitalis , as part of a pledge. The Knight Academy was founded under Abbot Placidus Seitz in 1710/11 . He brought the school tradition of Ettal to life. During the imperial administration of Spa Bavaria , war sciences were taught in Ettal, in particular ballistics and military and civil engineering, not only theoretically but also practically through building jumps and target practice with a cannon removed from the Munich arsenal. The church and monastery were largely destroyed in a fire in 1744. The knight academy was dissolved. In 1905, the Benedictine high school in Ettal , which is in the tradition of the knight academy, was founded as a royal Bavarian Latin school.
