The River John is a tributary of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia .
The River John arises at the confluence of its two headwaters, the West Branch and East Branch River John, about 30 km west of New Glasgow in the northwest of the Nova Scotia peninsula . Both source rivers have a length of about 20 km and arise in the Cobequid Mountains . The river flows mainly in a northerly direction. It passes Welsford and the town of the same name River John just before the mouth. The Nova Scotia Highway 6 crosses the river at River John. The river flows into the eastern part of Amet Sound , a bay to the south of the Northumberland Strait . The River John has a length of 20 km.
The River John is a spawning area for Atlantic salmon .
