Rivva is a German online aggregator .

history

The online service programmed by the developer Frank Westphal has been providing an overview of German-language blogs and online media, updated several times a day, online since 2007. On the basis of a search engine, the aggregation service evaluates current debates and establishes connections between different contributions. The site filters the social networks for posts that are particularly heavily discussed and recommended. The overview page with "top news" is generated automatically. An overview of reactions to individual articles is also given.

The name rivva (from English river ) is an allusion to the bon mot “News is a river” by Doc Searls .

Operations ceased in February 2011. The developer gave no information about the reasons for the move. Attempts to finance the aggregator with sponsored posts had previously not been successful. On the initiative of Vasco Sommer-Nunes, founder of the blog marketer mokono, a concept for marketing and financing Rivva was developed with the support of BMW i , a sub-brand of BMW . The project was continued in June 2011. For 2012, Westphal planned to reprogram Rivva. For example, a new ranking was planned. From May 2013 to May 2016 sueddeutsche.de was a partner of Rivva. In January 2019, the platform called for donations in order to be able to continue operations.

Due to the legal uncertainty caused by the new ancillary copyright law for press publishers , Rivva banned over 650 online media in July 2013.

functionality

As a ranking factor , Rivva considers hyperlinks as well as recommendations in social networks and uses them to show current German-language blog articles in the order of their importance: The articles that receive the most comments and links within a time unit are at the top. As a memtracker , Rivva also uses text analysis to assign thematically related blog articles to one another without direct links and to present them in a joint overview.

For quality assurance reasons, Rivva only includes links from a defined list of blogs when calculating its topic rankings. The self-learning program expands this list by frequently including blogs linked to blogs that are already listed. The list grew from seven "seed blogs" in 2007 to over 2500 in 2008. In August 2010, 4500 German-language and 1050 mostly English-language blogs and 54,000 Twitter accounts were recorded.
