Robert Alfred "Fuzzy" Theobald (born January 25, 1884 in San Francisco , California ; † May 13, 1957 ) was a Rear Admiral of the United States Navy , who in 1947 brought out a highly acclaimed book.

Life

He was the son of George Theobald and Hattie Caroline Yoell. Theobald graduated from the United States Naval Academy ( Naval Academy ), which he completed in the year 1907th In 1939 he was appointed chief of staff under Claude C. Bloch and shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 he was appointed commander of the Pacific destroyer fleet.

In 1942 he was promoted to Rear Admiral and on May 17, 1942, he was given command of the North Pacific Area of ​​Operations, specifically the Association of Task Force 8 , which was based in Alaska . After minor setbacks suffered by his association against the Japanese fleet, including the Japanese conquest of the Aleutian islands of Attu and Kiska , Theobald was replaced on January 4, 1943 by Rear Admiral Thomas C. Kinkaid .

He was, until he retired from the service in 1945, no other command posts, but won by the publication of his book The Final Secret of Pearl Harbor: The Washington Background of the Pearl Harbor Attack (German: "The Last Secret of Pearl Harbor, the Background to the attack on Pearl Harbor in Washington ”) some public attention. In that book, he accused the Roosevelt administration of using the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor as a provocation for the United States to enter World War II.

Robert Jr. Theobald (1909–1989), the son of Robert Alfred Theobald, also graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1931 and served as a captain in the US Navy.
