Robert Colwell (computer engineer)
Robert P. "Bob" Colwell (* 1954 ) is an American computer engineer, best known as the main architect of the P6 family at Intel .
Colwell, son of a Pennsylvania milkman , studied electrical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University . He was with Bell Laboratories (where he helped develop the BellMac microprocessors) from 1977 to 1980 and a computer design engineer with Multiflow (a New Haven mini supercomputer manufacturer in the 1980s ) before joining Intel in 1990 . There he was the main architect of the P6 family of processors ( Pentium Pro from 1995 and its successor). He also initiated and directed Pentium 4 development.
In 1997 he became an Intel Fellow. In 2001 he left Intel. Since 2011 he has been Deputy Director of the Microsystems Technology Office at DARPA . He is an IEEE Fellow and a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering .
In 2005 he received the Eckert-Mauchly Award and in 2012 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
