John Franz Robert Guthery , known as Robert Guthery senior , ( February 26, 1824 in Hamburg - March 5, 1903 in Berlin ) was a German theater actor , director and acting teacher.

Life

Guthery, called Robert Guthery senior , to distinguish it from Robert Guthery junior , who acted at the same time, but to whom he was not related, came from a family of actors. He made his debut in Lübeck in 1841. From there, at the instigation of the theater count Hahn, he went to Rostock, from there to Nuremberg, and then to Verona, where he enjoyed the special favor of Field Marshal Josef Wenzel Radetzky von Radetz . In 1852 he was at the royal theater in Berlin and then went to Kassel, from there to the Wallnertheater in Berlin . After he had also taken part in the founding of the Victoria Theater , he moved to Hamburg. There he also proved himself as a director, especially in operettas.

Guthery also worked in Amsterdam, at the Komische Oper in Vienna and in New York.

In 1891 he celebrated his 50th anniversary as an artist in Lübeck as "Piepenbrinck". With this performance he said goodbye to the stage and settled in Berlin, where he began to teach as an acting teacher.

The artist was married to the actress Pauline Keller , daughter of a theater director.
