Robert Gys

Robert Gys , born in Robert Albert Eugène Gigault , (born September 22, 1901 in Asnières-sur-Seine , France , † November 15, 1977 in Cagnes-sur-Mer ) was a French film architect .

Live and act

Gys, responsible for the visual design of numerous elegant, eye-catching entertainment productions for around three and a half decades at French cinema, began his cinematic activity in 1922 as an assistant to Robert Mallet-Stevens . In the days of the silent movies, Gys designed the buildings for several productions by Henri Diamant-Berger and Jacques de Baroncelli , but also worked as a set designer for René Clair's first major films . Since the mid-1930s, Gys has designed the decorations for various high-quality films with a purely entertainment character, including a work by Max Ophüls (“ Divine ”), Sacha Guitry (“ Bonne Chance ”), Abel Gance (“ L'homme d'un jeune homme pauvre ”), Kurt Bernhardt (“ L'or dans la rue ”), Jean Renoir (“ The crime of Mr. Lange ”) , Robert Siodmak (“ Mister Flow ”) and several works by Marcel L'Herbier .

Robert Gys has made a name for himself above all with historical decorating strips since 1942, when he designed the buildings for the ambitious "Carmen" film by director Christian-Jaque . Since then, the production designer and director, who first made a film together in 1937, have worked together regularly. Gys' film constructions for Christian-Jacques "'Set operas' were characterized by an old-fashioned, sometimes frumpy nobility and plushiness that conjured up the French pomp of the 17th century up to the late Belle Epoque." In 1960 the production designer withdrew from the cinema.
