Robert Hamilton, 1st Baronet (of Silverton Hill)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir Robert Hamilton, 1st Baronet (* before 1631, † 1670 ) was a Scottish nobleman and politician.

He was the son and heir of Edward Hamilton († 1649), Laird of Balgray and Silvertonhill, from his marriage to Margaret Mure.

He was a member of the Scottish Parliament for the Lanark constituency .

Because of financial difficulties, he sold the place Provan from his lands to the city of Glasgow .

In 1646 King Charles I awarded him the hereditary title of Baronet in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia , of Silvertonhill in the County of Lanark . Apparently due to the turmoil of the civil war , the award was not recorded in the official general register at the time.

He married Anne Hamilton, daughter of John Hamilton, 1st Lord Belhaven and Stenton . He had six children with her:

  • Colonel Sir Robert Hamilton, 2nd Baronet († 1708);
  • Margaret Hamilton († 1717) ⚭ John Hamilton, 2nd Lord Belhaven and Stenton ;
  • Thomas Hamilton;
  • Elizabeth Hamilton ⚭ Captain John Livingstone;
  • Anne Hamilton ⚭ Sir William Craigie of Garnie;
  • Mary Hamilton.
