Robert Koenig

Robert Koenig (born November 15, 1828 in Danzig ; † April 8, 1900 in Potsdam ) was a German teacher, writer and magazine editor .

Life

Koenig studied philology and theology in Berlin, Edinburgh, Bonn and Halle and became rector of a secondary school for girls in Oldenburg. In 1858 he became rector of the Droyßiger royal educational institutions . After spending some time in Lausanne , he took part in the founding of the family magazine Daheim , whose editorial management he held alongside Theodor Hermann Pantenius for many years. He had great success with his German literary history , which appeared for the first time in 1879, was equipped with a large number of illustrations and was particularly valued in conservative Christian circles. The work, which was expanded to two volumes from 1893 and became the standard work , continued to appear in new editions until the mid-1920s. His abridged version of the History of German Literature from 1886 was also widely used .
In 1889, Koenig gave up his work due to illness and moved to Potsdam, where he died at the age of 72. Koenig was an honorary member of the Leipziger Wingolf since 1880 .
