Robert Maxwell McMeeking (born May 22, 1950 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish-American mechanical engineer.

McMeeking went to school in Glasgow and studied mechanical engineering at the University of Glasgow with a bachelor's degree in 1972 and at Brown University with a master's degree in 1974 and his doctorate in 1977 with James R. Rice . The dissertation was about methods of plasticity theory with finite deformation in the context of finite elements and about ductile blunting of crack tips in metals. From 1976 to 1978 he was Acting Assistant Professor at Stanford University (where he worked on metal forming with Erastus H. Lee ), from 1978 Assistant Professor and from 1982 Professor of Mechanics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and from 1985 Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara . From 1992 to 1995 and 1999 to 2003 he headed the Mechanical and Environmental Engineering department. He is also a part-time professor at the University of Aberdeen.

He has published on plastic theory, fracture mechanics, numerical methods, glaciology, hard ceramics and composite materials, powder processing and sintering, ferroelectrics, fluid-structure interactions in underwater explosions, nanotribology, and biomechanics of cells, among others.

In 2014 he received the Timoshenko Medal and the William Prager Medal . In 2005 he became a member of the National Academy of Engineering and in 2002 a Fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics . In 2004 he received a Humboldt Research Award . He was visiting professor at Saarland University and is an external member of the Leibniz Institute for New Materials in Saarbrücken.

From 2002 to 2012 he was editor of the ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics.
