Robert Miles (sociologist)

Robert Miles (born April 22, 1950 in Dover ) is a British sociologist and political scientist. His research focus is on racism research , with his book Racism (German racism. Introduction to the history and theory of a term ) from 1989 being a key work on racism and its history.

In his work, race is viewed as a social construction and racism is understood as a process of its ideological production and socio-economic consolidation, among other things in institutions .

Life and professional history

Robert Miles was born in Dover in 1950 . He attended Dover Grammar School for Boys and then the University of Bath , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1973 . He then worked as a research fellow at the University of Bristol and received his PhD from the University of Glasgow in 1986 . From 1992 he was visiting professor at Glasgow Caledonian University for five years . Between 1993 and 1999 he was the head of the social sciences faculty at the University of Glasgow and headed the research group “Migration and Racism”. In 2000 he left the UK and accepted a professorship in sociology and international politics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill .
