Even before his exam in the school year 1903–1904, he worked as a teacher at the Landes-Ober-Realschule Krems . He stayed there until September 1908 and was then appointed professor at the Landes-Real-Obergymnasium in Horn , where he was a member of the teaching staff there for seven years.
As a reserve officer , he was wounded three times during the First World War . He died on July 8, 1915, meanwhile promoted to lieutenant , in the Russian theater of war and was buried on December 4, 1915 in the forest cemetery in St. Pölten.
On November 13, 1915, a memorial exhibition was opened in the large library hall of the Landes-Real- und Obergymnasium Horn. More than 70 Obtresal pictures were shown. The school's 44th annual report noted that the attendance was extremely busy and that much was sold; the high school also acquired a large picture which was given a place of honor in the conference room.
