Robert Christopher Towneley Parker (* 1950 ) is a British ancient historian and religious scholar .

Robert Parker studied Ancient History and Classical Philology at the University of Oxford . He completed his studies with a master’s degree and was then awarded a doctorate in DPhil . From 1976 he worked as a tutor in Greek and Latin Languages ​​and Literature at Oriel College , Oxford. In 1996 he was appointed Wykeham Professor of Ancient History at New College (Oxford) . He has been a member of the British Academy since 1998 . In 2011 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea . In 2012/2013 he was Sather Professor at the University of California, Berkeley .

Parker explores ancient Greek society particularly from an anthropological perspective. His special research focus is the Greek religion , its influence on the thinking and acting of the Greeks and their relationship to other polytheistic religions.
