Robert Prem

Robert Prem (born June 12, 1957 in Munich ) is a German disabled athlete . His greatest success was winning the three-keel boat sailing competition at the 2008 Summer Paralympics .

Life

Robert Prem was born in Munich. He played soccer in youth teams at FC Bayern Munich . In 1980 he moved to Vienna and worked in a discotheque. Two years later he moved to Berlin and attended a private drama school. In the following time he worked in pubs, a restaurant and a wine shop.

On July 11, 1991, he fell out of the window while trying to open the skylight at night. As a result of this accident he is paraplegic . He lost his job due to the bankruptcy of the wine shop, and he gave up his desire to become an actor during the hospitalization after the accident. After nine months in the hospital, he clung to any hope offered to overcome the paralysis or alleviate symptoms and tried all options including qigong , acupuncture , shamanism, and a urine regimen .

In 2002 he was granted retraining to become an office clerk and has been working in the secretariat of a school ever since. During the retraining he got to know another handicapped sailor who took him to training. Since then he has been practicing this sport. He also plays wheelchair badminton .

He starts sailing for the Berlin-Grünau yacht club .

In 2012 he was honored with the silver bay leaf for his successes.

Since the Summer Paralympics 2000 , the three- seater keelboat in the Sonar boat class has been a competition in sailing . At the Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008 Prem won the gold medal in a team with Jens Kroker and Siegmund Mainka and four years later the silver medal in the same team in London .

He and his team are currently preparing for the 2016 Paralympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, which according to current planning will be the last time that sailing competitions will be held.
