Robert Schmidt (art historian)

Robert Schmidt (born December 2, 1878 in Bad Oeynhausen , † October 6, 1952 in Milan ) was a German art historian .

Robert Schmidt studied art history with Heinrich Wölfflin from 1900 , first in Basel , then in Berlin . In 1904 he became a research assistant for Justus Brinckmann at the Museum of Art and Industry in Hamburg. From 1905 he worked at the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts under Otto von Falke , initially as a research assistant, from 1907 as an assistant, from 1915 as a curator . From 1918 to 1927 he was director of the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Frankfurt am Main. In 1928 he returned to Berlin and was director of the Kunstgewerbemuseum there until 1945. After the war, on February 13, 1948, he became head of the Zonal Fine Arts Repository , the British art collection at Schloss Celle in the u. a. the holdings of the Berlin museums were collected.
