Robert Schneider (* 1875 in Darmstadt ; † 1945 there ) was a German writer and poet . He is considered to be one of the most important native and dialect poets in South Hesse and in particular in his hometown Darmstadt. He is the grandfather of the screenwriter and actor Robert Stromberger .

In addition to numerous volumes of poetry and local political commentaries in the Darmstädter Tagblatt , he and Georg Büchner wrote the dialect posse Der Lumbe-Awend or Mann is Mann , which was first performed in 1927. In 1933 he was banned from writing.

Robert Schneider was a member of the Darmstadt Masonic Lodge Johannes der Evangelist zur Eintracht from 1923 to 1945 .

Effect to this day

  • The Niebergall Fountain, which was erected in Darmstadt in 1930, is still one of the most famous city symbols. The Niebergall fountain was set up at the instigation of Robert Schneider to preserve the memory of the Darmstadt poet Ernst Elias Niebergall .
  • After the Second World War , Darmstadt's Schwanengasse was rededicated to Robert-Schneider-Strasse in honor of the recently deceased Robert Schneider.
  • When it became known in 2011 that u. a. Robert Schneider's birthplace (on Robert-Schneider-Straße) should be demolished because of new building plans, the citizens' initiative “Lively Martinsviertel” protested. However, in 2013 the birthplace was demolished.
