Robert Spencer, 4th Earl of Sunderland (born October 24, 1701 in Althorpe, Northamptonshire , † September 15, 1729 in Paris ) was a British peer and politician .

Life

He was the eldest son of Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland , from his second marriage to Lady Anne Churchill, the second daughter of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough . As apparent marriage of his father, he carried the courtesy title of Lord Spencer from 1702 to 1722 .

When his father died in 1722, he inherited his title of nobility as 4th Earl of Sunderland and 6th Baron Spencer and thereby became a member of the House of Lords .

At the coronation of King George II in 1727, he held the ceremonial office of Lord Grand Carver of England .

In 1729 he was on a Grand Tour in France when he fell ill with a fever and died in Paris . His body was transferred to England and buried in his family's crypt in Great Brington, Northamptonshire on October 7, 1729. Since he remained unmarried and childless, his next younger brother Charles inherited his title of nobility.
