Robert Stong

Robert Evert Stong (born August 23, 1936 in Oklahoma City , † April 10, 2008 ) was an American mathematician who dealt with algebraic topology (especially Kobordism theory).

Stong received his doctorate from Richard Lashof at the University of Chicago in 1962 ( Some relations among characteristic classes and numbers ). In 1966 he became an assistant professor at Princeton University , and his lecture on cobordism theory that he gave there appeared as an influential textbook at the time. From the 1970s he was a professor at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . In 1975/76 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study .

In the 1980s he developed elliptical cohomology with Peter Landweber , Douglas Ravenel .

He was a Sloan Research Fellow from 1968 .
