Robert d'Escourt Atkinson
Robert d'Escourt Atkinson ( April 11, 1898 - October 28, 1982 ) was a British astronomer, physicist and inventor.
In the 1930s he was - together with Friedrich Georg Houtermans - one of the first to advocate the idea that the chemical elements are formed inside the stars. For this he was awarded the Eddington Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1960 . In 1929 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .
In 1937 he became principal assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory .
In 1964 he moved to Indiana University , where he retired in 1979 .
The asteroid (1827) Atkinson is named after him.
