Roberto Roberti (actually Vincenzo Leone ; born April 5, 1879 in Torella dei Lombardi ; † March 6, 1959 ibid) was an Italian film director and actor .

Life

After attending high school with the Salesians in Cava de 'Tirreni , Leone graduated from the University of Naples Federico II in law. Since 1901 he belonged to a circle of fans of the new medium of film. Supported by Ermete Novelli , he belonged from 1904 to the circle of artists around Irma Gramatica , alongside whom he played as an actor in La figlia di Iorio and who gave him his stage name, under which he functioned his professional life. In 1905 he belonged to the acting company of Ida Carloni Talli -Irma Gramatica- Oreste Calabresi . At the beginning of 1912 he appeared on stage with Eleonora Duse and then next to Ferruccio Garavaglia . Roberti's film debut in Carlo Alberto Lolli's La bufera had already been made the year before .

After Garavaglia's death in April 1912, Roberti devoted himself exclusively to the cinema, where he directed numerous dramas and costume films as an actor and director (often with the participation of his wife Bice Valerian ) for Aquila Film until 1917. From 1918 he was considered a regular director Francesca Bertini , with whom he had played in La piccola fonte the year before . By 1921, numerous cinema works were the result of this collaboration. Then the crisis of the Italian cinema and its political, anti-fascist attitude interrupted its career abruptly and for many years. By 1929, only three films were released under Roberti's direction, and then Il socio invisibile was not his sound film debut until 1939 . Two more unnoticeable films followed - his last film, made in 1944, did not appear until six years later.

Roberti is the father of Sergio Leone .
