The memorial commemorates Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts . The field marshal died in France in November 1914 during the First World War . The statue is a replica of a 1915 statue of Harry Bates that stands in Calcutta . The monument was unveiled in 1916. It stands on the eastern edge of Kelvingrove Park on the western edge of the Park District .
The classical pedestal is made of granite . It is designed as an aedicule with four Corinthian columns. The richly ornamented pedestal shows a commemorative plaque with an extract from a speech Roberts gave in Glasgow in 1913. The pillars support the statue's base with a frieze . The bronze statue shows Lord Roberts in military uniform on a horse.
