Robin Hardy

Robin St Clair Rimington Hardy (born October 2, 1929 in Surrey - † July 1, 2016 ) was a British film director , screenwriter and novelist .

Life

Hardy was best known for directing the 1973 film The Wicker Man . This production was also his directorial debut. Another film followed in 1986 with The Fantasist , and in 2011 he directed The Wicker Tree, a sequel to his debut based on one of his own books. Neither of the films could by far match the fame of his first directorial work.

Hardy began his career as a director for the National Film Board of Canada and the Esso World Theater program on the US channel PBS . He later moved to London and co-founded the Hardy Shaffer Ferguson Avery advertising agency. After staging The Wicker Man , he moved back to the United States, directed commercials and participated in historical theme parks. He also worked as a book author and developed a musical about Winston Churchill . In 2006 he published the horror novel Cowboys for Christ: On May Day .

For The Wicker Man , Hardy was nominated for a prize at the 1979 Saturn Awards ceremony in the Best Director category.

Hardy died in 2016 at the age of 86; he was survived by his fifth wife and eight children.
