Roč [ ˈrɔtʃ ] (German obsolete: Rotz , Italian Rozzo d'Istria ) is a small town in the northeast of the Croatian peninsula of Istria . It is located about 50 km southeast of the Italian city of Trieste . Roč, which despite its town charter only has around 180 inhabitants, has a well-preserved medieval structure including city walls and monuments from the Venetian period.
history
The place was already firmly settled in prehistoric times. A fortress was built here in the High Middle Ages. It was first mentioned in a document in 1064 . During the Venetian period, especially from the 12th to the 15th century, a settlement developed that became one of the most important focal points of Croatian literature and remained until the 20th century. The medieval city wall was destroyed in a skirmish between the local population and Venetian forces. The Venetians allowed the city to be rebuilt in 1421.
Sights and tour
One enters the city through a city gate from the 15th century. A collection of Roman tombstones can be viewed in the passage area of the gate. After you have passed the city gate and keep to the right, you will reach the Church of Saint Roch, a small Romanesque church with an apse. Inside it contains frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. The older layer shows the cycle of Saint Paul, the younger shows the apostles. If you keep to the left after leaving the church, you will come to the Church of Saint Anthony the Abbot , also a Romanesque church from the 11th century. Its interior contains Old Slavic inscriptions, some of which date back to around 1200. The largest church in the village in its center is the parish church of St. Bartholomew from the 14th century. A comprehensive expansion took place in the 18th century. The approximately 26 meter high tower was built in 1676. A plaque in the church tower wall with the letters DOMA and the number MDCLXXVI reminds of this. Inside, the church's treasury contains a collection of silver liturgical vessels from the 17th century. The organ dates from 1907.
The Glagolitic Avenue leads from Roč to the neighboring town of Hum . The avenue is a monument to Glagolitsa , the oldest Slavic script.
