Glagolitic avenue

The Glagolitic Avenue ( Croatian Aleja glagoljaša ) in northwestern Croatia ( Istria ) leads over six kilometers from Roč to Hum . Along the way, monuments remind of eleven important stations in the historical development of the oldest Slavic script Glagolitsa .

history

The project was realized in 1976 on the initiative of the Istrian cultural event Čakavski sabor based on the concept of the writers Zvane Črnja (1920–1991) and Josip Bratulić (* 1939). The stone sculptures of the stations were created between 1977 and 1983 by the sculptor Želimir Janeš (1916–1996).

The column of the Čakavian People's Assembly ( Stup Čakavskog sabora ) is a two-meter-high stone column in the shape of the Glagolitic letter "S". This is called "Slovo" in Old Slavonic and stands for reason and understanding. On it you can find the names of the cities "ROC" and "HUM" and the words ALEIA GLAGOL AŠA. The following text can be found on the metal plate placed in front of it:

The table of Cyril and Method ( Stol Ćirila i Metoda ) is a round three-legged table on which the words STOL KIRILA I METODIJA are carved in Latin , Cyrillic and Glagolitic script . Two cypresses were planted next to the table, symbolizing the two saints Cyril and Methodius of Salonica . Only one of these trees has been standing since 2006. Headquarters of the Kliment of Ohrid

As the seat of the Kliment of Ohrid ( Katedra klimenta ohridskog ), a catheter with eight stone blocks functioning as seats was arranged in a circle, symbolizing the first Slavic school . It was founded in Ohrid by Kliment, a disciple of the Holy Brothers . The sculpture stands under an oak that was replaced by a new plant around 2013. There is an inscription with Glagolitic letters on the forehead of the seat. The text is written on an explanatory stone

Glagolitic lapidary

In the village of Brnobići, the so-called Glagolitic Lapidarium ( Glagoljski Lapidarij ) was set up next to the church . Copies of important Glagolitic monuments have been placed on the wall surrounding the square: a reconstruction of the Baška tablet, the Plomin tablet, the Valun tablet, the Krk inscription and others.

In the gorge of the Croatian Luzidar ( Klanac hrvatskog Lucidara ) at the foot of the village of Brnobići stands a wall in the shape of a mountain. It symbolizes the Učka mountain . At the top of the mountain, a sculpted stone depicts a cloud over its summit. This monument is dedicated to the Croatian lucidary , a medieval encyclopedia used by Glagolitic priests. In the stone cloud is written: ZOVET SE ISTRIJA - OLINFOS - JE UČKA - IDE POD OBLAKI (translated: “There is a country called Istria. And in this country there are mountains, in Latin it is called Olinfos, and here is called es Učka. And its tip touches the clouds. ”) A stone attached to the monument contains the inscription

At the lookout point of Gregory of Nin ( Vidikovac Grgura Ninskog ) is carved into a block of stone in the form of a book, the alphabet in Latin, Cyrillic and Glagolitic script. It commemorates the Croatian bishop Gregory of Nin, who fought for the rights of his national church during the Croatian national dynasty in the 10th century . In the 19th century , Gregory became a symbol of resistance against interference from Vienna and Rome. The inscription is on a metal plate embedded in front of it

The rise of the Istrian code of law ( Uspon istarskog razvoda ) is represented by a stone gate in the shape of the Glagolitic letter "L", with which a gently ascending path begins. Along it, stone sculptures form the word ISTARSKI RAZVOD , the Istrian code of law from 1275. The letters are based on local objects, such as B. a basket, an oven or a small church. The path ends at a round table on which a Mühle playing field is carved.

The wall of the Croatian Protestants and heretics ( Zid hrvatskih protestanata i heretika ) is a typical dry stone wall . As a recess, the Glagolitic letter "S" is embedded in the form of an hourglass on which the names of Croatian Protestants and heretics are carved. Excerpts from Protestant books are on plates on the wall.

At the monument Rest of Žakan Juri ( Odmorište Žakna Jurja ) there is a large stone block in the middle that symbolizes a book. It is engraved on it:

"Vita, vita. Štampa naša gori gre. Tako ja oču da naša gori gre, 1482. miseca ijuna 26. dni to be pisano v grade Izule. To pisa Juri Žakan iz Roča. Bog mu pomagai i vsem ki mu dobro ote "

This is a comment by Žakan Juri from Roč, in which he announces the appearance of the first printed Croatian book. It was a missal from 1483. Around the stone block seven stone letters form the name Žakan Juri .

Monument to Resistance and Freedom

The monument for resistance and freedom ( Spomenik otporu i slobodi ), a sculpture made of three stacked stone cubes, which symbolize the three historical epochs of antiquity , the Middle Ages and the modern era , stands in front of the entrance to the town of Hum . Each cube is provided in the appropriate script: Latin for ancient times, Glagolitic for the Middle Ages, the modern age is symbolized by a song of the Istrian national rebirth. All three cubes together stand for the centuries-old resistance to violence and destruction, and the desire for peace and freedom.

The city gate of Hum ( Humska vrata ) is a two-winged gate covered with copper. It is adorned with twelve medallions, each representing a month in the life in the house and yard. Glagolitic inscriptions are attached to the two door knockers, welcoming visitors to the city, but also threatening anyone who wants to enter with bad intentions. The door handles form two ox horns, which are a symbol of the everyday life of the farmers in the region.

Other Glagolitic projects

On the Croatian island of Krk, there is a similar project in Baška , the Glagolitic Path . The path consists of stone monuments that can be found in various parts of Baška and its surroundings.
