Rocco Rodio
Rocco Rodio (* about 1535 in Bari , † 1607) was an Italian Renaissance - composer and music theorist who especially for his spiritual work and his Ricercare for keyboard instruments is known. He belonged to the Neapolitan school.
biography
Rodio apparently lived a cosmopolitan life, possibly also working at the Polish court and then settling in Naples . Rodio was acquainted with various members of Carlo Gesualdo's Academy in Naples, organized a Camerata di Propaganda per l'Affinamento del Gusto Musicale together with other Neapolitan musicians and probably also maintained connections with Polish and Spanish composers.
Rodio's work, both in music and music theory, was progressive for its time and shows a competent composer. His treatise Regole di musica spread both in Italy and beyond its borders. Rodios Libro primo di ricercate (1575) is the earliest surviving score for keyboard instruments. It contains five ricercare and four fantasies, all of which are characterized by a very individual harmonic language. Together with Antonio Valentes Intavolatura de cimbalo, this print represents the earliest works of the so-called Neapolitan school, which later included important composers such as Ascanio Mayone and Giovanni Maria Trabaci .
