Rock-A-Teens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rock-A-Teens were a young sextet from Richmond ( Virginia ). Her only success was the piece Woo Hoo , which was inducted into the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1959 and stayed there for twelve weeks, the best position was 16th.

Career

The group began in 1956 as a high school student band under the name Boo Walke & the Rockets. Leader Vic micelle was ( vocals , guitar ), the other members were Bobby "Boo" Walke (guitar), Bill Cook (guitar), Eddie Robinson ( saxophone ), Paul Dixon ( bass ) and Bill Smith ( drums ).

In 1959 the band played George Donald McGraw, who owned a record business and the Mart Records label. McGraw was particularly impressed by one of the group's original compositions, Rock-A-Teen Boogie . Renamed Woo-Hoo , with the B-side Untrue (a vocal piece), it was released in August 1959 on a Mart Records sub-label (Doran 3515).

Since Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith sued Rock-A-Teens over copyright, McGraw bought the group for a few hundred dollars the rights to both compositions, arguing that they could not be sued then. On the nationwide new edition of the record by Roulette Records, New York (Roulette 4192), GD McGraw was already registered as the author on both sides.

In 1959 another single by the Rock-A-Teens Twangy was released (Roulette Records R-4217)

Roulette released an album in 1960 entitled Woo Hoo (Roulette SR-25109) with seven sung and five instrumental pieces. Untrue , the B-side of their successful single was left out because it seemed too bad for the group. The LP was a commercial flop at the time, but is now a sought-after rarity for fans, as it shows the strength of the group as a musically original, “aggressive” garage rock band , years before this genre was discovered as such.
