The Große Mühle Madlow is a listed building ensemble in the Cottbus district of Madlow .

history

On July 29, 1495, the Madlower mill is mentioned for the first time. Production also started that year. In 1496, the city of Cottbus bought the mill from Elector Johann Cicero as a "desert mill on the Spree". On March 12, 1510, the Elector of Brandenburg transferred the mill to the city of Cottbus with all rights. The mill survived the Thirty Years War (1618–1648) largely unscathed.

In 1665 there were three grinders, four millet mills and a cutting mill. A new mill house and cutting mill were built in 1732. In 1765 Count v. Pückler to acquire the mill, but unsuccessfully. On May 25, 1771, the grinding and cutting mill as well as the property were leased to the mill master Vogel. The property was named "Vogel's Big Mill" or "Big Mill Madlow". The mill master Vogel received the right to water by the Prussian king on October 15, 1781.

For the construction of a fulling mill , the Cottbus clothmaker's trade bought apartment, land and water power from Vogel for 30 thalers a year. In 1827 the Walke was expanded. Six fulling and washing holes were set up. The Cottbus cloth manufacturer Kittel built a spinning and finishing factory on the Mühlenspree in Vogelschen Schneidegarten in 1829 , today's west building. About ten years later, an oil mill, a grain cleaning plant with pointed aisle and a rasping plant were built. The dilapidated Walke was torn down in 1844 and rebuilt in a timber frame style by the draperies. The Vogel family bought the Walke for 6100 thalers in 1868. They also built a new grinding mill using the water power they had acquired, which is today's red mill building. In 1904 a turbine system was installed and in 1908 the "Big Mill Madlow" became a GmbH. It now consisted of a grain mill with a daily output of 50 t, an oil mill and a cutting mill. In 1919 the cutting mill was expanded and six years later it was increased. The partners August Karow (Stettin) and Fritz Michaelis (Cottbus) founded a limited partnership in 1937 . The grain silo was built on the site of the old grinding mill, the reinforced concrete structure held 1000 tons of grain. The mill building was badly damaged during the Second World War . After the end of the war, the building was restored to provide a makeshift daily production of 9 t.

In 1951 the mill became " public property " due to the expropriation of the shareholders . 14 years later, reconstruction measures were carried out and the oil mill and cutting mill were shut down. After the reunification of Germany, the mill was returned to the heirs of the company. The company is now called "Große Mühle Madlow Karow & Co. KG Cottbus".

Mill operations were stopped in 1995 after more than 500 years. STG Cottbus bought the entire property in 1998 and four years later the extensive reconstruction of the mill building began. In 2003 the main building, the red mill, was inaugurated and production began. The STG reconstructed the west building in 2005 and in October 2007 Mauricio White Vogel, a direct descendant of the old mill master Vogel, was visiting from Chile.

The bridges in the area of the mill

The bridge over the Priorgraben at the "Große Mühle" was renewed from November 7th 2005 to April 28th 2006. The old brick vaulted bridge structure was demolished and a new one, consisting of a reinforced concrete frame with a deep foundation of steel sheet piling, was added. The roadway in the area of the bridge is made of mastic asphalt.

The bridge over the Mühlgraben in Madlow along the L50 in the direction of Kiekebusch was demolished in January 2008. The construction project was funded by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Planning with the help of the funding program for the improvement of traffic conditions in the communities. The reason for the new building was the absence of curbs and sidewalks. The bridge no longer complied with the required building regulations. In this context, the bridge was widened to ensure sufficient traffic safety. Approval took place on July 14, 2008. The old bridge consisted of reinforced concrete in a simple, linear construction with a simple steel parapet. The look of the new bridge is based on the old one.

The mill building

The mill building is a clinker brick structure with arched windows. The left part of the building has four floors and is accessible through a separate double-leaf arched door. The right part of the building has five floors and the part of the gable that is visible and adjoins the middle part of the building is made of glass. The entrance also has a double-leaf arched door and is provided with a six-step staircase. The middle part of the building is a six-storey tower that ends with a terrace. Small polygonal corner towers adorn every corner of the terrace as well as every roof corner. A toothed frieze can be seen below the terrace parapet. To the left and right at the foot of the tower is a stair-like beautification building. The entrance is on the side here and is delimited by a half-height brick wall. Each part of the building has a very flat gable roof . The individual floors are optically separated from each other by a band and above each window there is a frieze made of clinker bricks adapted to the shape of the window.
