The Rock Island Centennial Bridge (also: Centennial Bridge ) is an arch bridge . It connects Rock Island , Illinois with Davenport , Iowa . The bridge is 1,173 m long and stands 52 m above the water of the Mississippi .
After it opened in 1940, the Centennial Bridge was initially subject to tolls . The originally charged fee of US $ 0.05 has been increased over time to US $ 0.50 for cars and even to US $ 2 for articulated trucks . On May 2, 2003, the toll was abolished. Pedestrians also had to pay a fee of US $ 0.05 to pass the bridge until 1960.
Originally the bridge to Robert Galbraith, the former mayor of rock Iceland should Galbraith Bridge to be baptized. But on the occasion of the centennial of the Rock Islands, the latter suggested the name Centennial Bridge .
In 1998, lights were installed on the five arches of the bridge. The arches are often viewed as a symbol of the Quad Cities . On the Davenporter side of the bridge, a little upstream, is the John O'Donnell Stadium .
