The Rocky Hill Wildlife Sanctuary is a 421 acres (1.7 square kilometers ) comprehensive protected area in Groton in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .
Protected area
The sanctuary is part of a federal Area of Critical Environmental Concern and was named after the ledges and large boulders that shape the landscape there. There are also extensive forest areas that provide a habitat for beavers , elk , great blue herons , turkey vultures , forest frogs and tree porcupines , among others . A total of almost 100 bird and over 240 plant species were counted in the protected area. There are 3 mi (4.8 km ) of hiking trails available to visitors.
