Exterior
The straight, dry head with fine ears stands on a strong, straight neck and sloping shoulder. The short and straight back turns into a slightly sloping croup. Mostly chocolate-colored with flax-colored long hair, but also all other colors except piebalds.
interior
The Rocky Mountain Horse is a good trail riding horse due to its stamina and surefootedness, which is underlined by its natural tendency to tölt. It also works well as a light chariot horse.
Breeding history
The development of the Rocky Mountain Horse goes back to Sam Tuttle , who ran a riding stable in Kentucky and whose stallion Old Tobe was well known for his tölt disposition and rideability. He passed both on to his offspring, which made him a popular breeding stallion. Many of today's Rocky Mountain Horses have Old Tobe in their pedigree. They are very durable and sure-footed and are ideal for riding on uneven terrain. It is believed that Rocky Mountain Horses line the blood of both Spanish horses and the Narragansett Pacer. In 1986 the stud book was opened and closed again in 2004. At the end of 2005, over 13,000 Rocky Mountain Horses were registered with the Association.
