Rodolfo Illanes

Rodolfo Joaquín Illanes Alvarado (born August 18, 1958 in La Paz ; † August 25, 2016 at Panduro ) was a Bolivian lawyer and politician who served as Deputy Minister for Internal Affairs in the 3rd Cabinet of the President Evo Morales served.

Life

Rodolfo Illanes was born in La Paz in 1958. He was a lawyer at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (UMSA) in La Paz and worked on behalf of the Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) in the scientific specialty of forensic science .

Illanes was an advisor to President Evo Morales in his first term. In the Ministry of Labor, he was first senior director in the administrative service and then deputy minister in the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Community Service.

On March 14, 2016, he took over the position of Deputy Minister for Internal Affairs from Marcelo Elío Chávez .

Kidnapping and death

On August 25, 2016, Illanes and his assistant were kidnapped on the way to Panduro, where he wanted to speak to participants about protests critical of the government. He was later murdered by striking Bolivian miners . His assassination came as a shock to the protest-rich country and to the ruling MAS . Defense Minister Reymi Ferreira collapsed during a televised broadcast explaining how Illanes had apparently been "beaten and tortured to death".

Government Minister Carlos Romero spoke of a “cowardly and brutal killing” and called on the striking miners to hand over the body of the murdered man to the police without delay.
