Rodrigo Javier Hinzpeter Kirberg (born October 27, 1965 in Santiago ) is a Chilean politician .

The lawyer of Jewish descent is married to journalist Joyce Ventura and has three sons named Raimundo, Guillermo and Ernesto. He spent his school days at the Instituto Hebreo Doctor Chaim Weizmann and Liceo A 67 Alexander Fleming in the eastern part of the Chilean capital . He then studied law at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile until 1992 . Later he taught, among other things, as a professor of civil law at this university. He is also the author of the book "La Hipoteca" (Ediciones La Ley, 1993). Hinzpeter, a member of the Chilean Bar Association, also worked as a lawyer in the New York law firm " Simpson Thacher & Bartlett ". He belongs to the Renovación Nacional , of which he is also one of the founders. Within the party he held the function of the Secretario Nacional and was its first vice-president from 2001 and 2004. He was also a member of the Comisión Política . In 2005 he was campaign manager during the presidential election. In the subsequent election, he acted as general coordinator of the campaign team.

Hinzpeter has been Minister of the Interior in the cabinet of Sebastián Piñera since March 11, 2010 . On November 5, 2012, he succeeded Andrés Allamand as Chilean Defense Minister.

criticism

Hinzpeter is criticized for the Ley Hinzpeter legislative initiative . This provides for the organizers or initiators of a meeting to be held accountable in the event of riots. An initial initiative for this law was made by Hinzpeter in June 2012 after years of school and student protests . Amnesty International's legislative initiative has been heavily criticized as a far-reaching criminalization of social movements .
