Roeboides is a genus of small tetra that is widespread in Central and South America.

features

The Roeboides species are quite similar to the closely related genus Charax . Her body is high back, elongated, strongly flattened on the sides and almost transparent. With lengths of 4.8 to 18.5 centimeters, they are only larger than the Charax species and their collarbone (clavicle) has a spine. The dorsal fin stands approximately above the middle of the body and is pointed in the males. The anal fin is very long, an adipose finis available. The caudal fin is forked, the lower lobe is often longer. The head is relatively short, the eyes large. In addition to the jaw teeth, which are arranged in two rows in the upper jaw, the genus has wart-like, small outer teeth that remain visible from the outside when the mouth is closed. They are used to grate the scales of other fish.

Roeboides species live mainly in dense vegetation and prefer to stay in the lower water layers. Like the Charax species, they swim upside down in an inclined posture.
