Roger (Maine)

Roger (also Rotger ; † October 31, 900 ) was Count of Maine from 886 to 893 and from 895 to 898. He was probably married to Rothild (* probably 871; † 929/929), a daughter of Charles the Bald ( Carolingian ) .

886, at the death of Count Gauzfried from the house of the Rorgonids , his son Gauzbert was still too young to be his successor in such an important border region as Maine was, especially against the Bretons and the Normans . The county was therefore given to Roger, who was one of the allies of the Robertin Odo of Paris , who in the same year became lord of Anjou and Touraine , the following year regent and again a year later (888) became king of France . A little later, around 890, Roger probably married a daughter of Charles the Bald and thus into the (still) royal family.

In the following years the Rorgonids and the Robertines fought over the county. Gauzbert managed to oust Roger in 893, but had to give way himself two years later. Gauzbert's brother Gauzlin II had the same success, but also only for two years .

After Roger's death in 900, his son Hugo I († 940) was appointed his successor. It is considered likely that Hugo later married a daughter of Gauzlin in order to put an end to the dispute between the families.
