Roger Boyle, 1st Earl of Orrery (born April 25, 1621 in Lismore , Ireland , † October 16, 1679 in Castlemartyr , Ireland) was an English statesman and writer.

Life

He was a son of Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork ( Great Earl of Cork ; 1566-1643), and Catherine Fenton (1582-1629); one of his brothers was the naturalist Robert Boyle . He married Lady Margaret Howard (1622–1689) on January 27, 1640, with whom he had seven children: Elizabeth, Margaret, Roger , Henry and three other daughters.

He was elevated to Baron Boyle of Broghill by Charles I on February 28, 1628 . He stood on the side of the king until his execution, but was won over to the cause of Parliament by Oliver Cromwell in 1649 and assisted the same in the submission of Ireland.

After Cromwell's death, Boyle appeared again for Charles II , who in 1660 appointed him Earl of Orrery and Lord Justice of Ireland. At the same time he was elected to the House of Commons . He turned down the state seal that had been removed from Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon in 1665 . Accused of treason by James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde , Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , after justifying himself, he resigned from his post. Since then he has devoted his time to science and poetry.

He wrote the novel Parthenissa (1665, 3 vol.), Several tragedies, but especially State letters , which were only published after his death in 1742.

Roger Boyle first described the color change of silver chloride in 1663 , which he however attributed to the influence of the air.
