Roger Carter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roger William Carter (* 1934 ) is a British mathematician.

Roger Carter received his doctorate in 1960 with the dissertation "Some Contributions to the Theory of Finite Soluble Groups" under Derek Roy Taunt at the University of Cambridge . Today he is emeritus at the University of Warwick .

Carter's particular interest is in the theory of Lie algebras , and his textbook on the theory of Lie-type groups, given below, is considered the standard reference. The nilpotent and self-normalizing subgroups he studied in 1961 are now known as the Carter subgroups.
