Riise was the son of the captain and businessman Jens Christian Riise (1773-1814) and his wife Margrethe Elisabeth Krabbe (1779-1869). The father died at sea when his ship got caught in a storm. After school he did an apprenticeship in the pharmacy in Ærøskøbing and from 1825 to 1830 he worked in the pharmacy in Fåborg . He then traveled to Copenhagen , where he graduated in 1832. While he continued to study botany and chemistry , he worked simultaneously in different pharmacies in the capital.

A long-cherished wish to visit the West Indies was granted in 1838 when he was granted the privilege of working as a pharmacist in the Danish West Indies. When he arrived in St. Thomas , he first worked in a medical community. In the following year he founded his own pharmacy together with a doctor. In 1843 he paid off his partner and became the sole owner of the pharmacy. Business was good and the company was growing. Riise traveled to the United States and Trinidad , among others .

Equipped with a large stock of all kinds of goods, especially pharmaceutical products, the St. Thomas Pharmacy became known on the surrounding Caribbean islands.

Riise showed a keen interest in botany and used plants and animals from the Caribbean to manufacture pharmaceutical, cosmetic and alcoholic products.

Producer of rum

Among other things, the then well-known Riise's Bay Rum (a kind of scented water / perfume) was instrumental in the later prosperity of AH Riise. AH Riise was also a pioneer in the distillation and sale of rum and bitters from the West Indies , which were then used as medicine for stomach ailments and other problems. AH Riise had a lot of success with his rum from the West Indies, he also exported it to several continents and was particularly popular in his home country Denmark.

Riise exported its rum under various brands including Old St. Croix Brand , Riises Guava Rum, and AH Riise Rum . Today, Dansk-Vestindisk Rom Kompagni markets Caribbean rum under the AH Riise brand.

Over the years, AH Riise's rum has received multiple awards and won medals at several competitions and exhibitions. The first was awarded to Riise in 1893 at the Colombian World's Fair in Chicago .

Back in Denmark

When there were epidemics of cholera , yellow fever and smallpox in 1868 , the family decided to travel to Denmark for a year. After the year was over, however, she decided to stay. The pharmacy on St. Thomas was turned over to an assistant who married one of Riise's daughters. A son from this connection later became a pharmacist in Ærøskøbing.

Albert Riise bought the Alleenlyst villa in Frederiksberg Allée , which he renamed St. Thomas . After Riise's death in 1882, the villa was sold and demolished in 1900. The place is known today as “St. Thomas Square ”.

Albert Riise was also director of the "Bank of St. Thomas" and was appointed Knight of Dannebrog , Knight of the Swedish Order of Wasa , in 1868 to the judiciary and in 1878 to Etatsråd.

He is buried in the Solbjerg Park cemetery. A memorial plaque was placed at his birthplace in Ærøskøbing .

On January 27, 1842, he married in Frederiksted on the island of Saint Croix Henriette Marie Worm (1821-1889). The couple had 13 children, including photographer Frederik Riise .
