Roger Gabet (born December 12, 1923 in Paris , † February 20, 2007 ) was a French football player .

Club career

The 170 centimeter tall midfielder Gabet, who was born in Paris, started playing football at a club from Houilles near the capital. He then played for a club called Avia Club before moving to Racing Paris in 1944 . In 1945 he moved up to the first division team and thus achieved his admission to professional football . At a time when substitutions and substitutions were not yet possible, the then 21-year-old was able to establish himself directly in the first team. Within a team that mostly found themselves in the middle of the table, Gabet was partly as a winger in addition to his traditional role in the midfieldmobilized. Especially in his first career years he was therefore successful as a scorer and followed eleven goals in the 1946/47 season with thirteen goals in the 1947/48 period, his best hit rate. With Paris he made it to the national cup final in 1949 , in which the team met the OSC Lille . In the course of the game he not only put his team in the lead, but also made it 3-0 in the meantime and in the end, thanks to a 5-2 win, won the trophy. At the cup final in 1950 , the capital city got a chance to defend their title, but they missed it in the 2-0 defeat against Stade Reims .

Following the second cup final, the player remained the undisputed regular player of a team that was increasingly approaching relegation and in 1953 had to accept the fall into the second division. Nevertheless, he remained loyal to racing and was rewarded with a direct resurgence in 1954. However, he then had to fight for his regular place, which he lost at the beginning of the 1956/57 season. He then turned his back on the club on December 1, 1956 after around twelve years and signed with the second division club FC Nantes based in the west of the country . Although he was regularly called up in this again, but he remained with the team from a possible promotion. In 1958 he ended his professional career at the age of 34 after 290 first division games with 56 goals and 65 second division games with 10 goals.

After the end of his time in professional football, Gabet went to US Le Mans in 1958 , for which he was on the pitch until 1964. He then carried out the role of player- coach at a club from the neighboring town of Coulaines from 1964 to 1965 . He also stayed in Le Mans beyond that, where he managed a sporting goods store until 1984, which he founded in 1958.

National team

Gabet was 25 years old when he wore the shirt of the French national team for the first time on April 23, 1949 in a 4-1 defeat in a friendly against the Netherlands . With his third international match, which he played on May 22 of the same year in a 3-1 draw against England, his international career ended again and had lasted less than a month. Actually, he could have booked further appointments in the selection of his country, but possible missions were prevented by his fear of flying. This was created against the background that he owned a photograph that showed boxer Marcel Cerdan and his national team-mate Émile Bongiorni ; Both died independently of one another in airplane crashes within a few months in 1949.
