Career

Roger Zami was born in Le Gosier , in the French overseas province of Guadeloupe . At the age of 20 he came to France as a soldier. At first he lived in Saint-Nazaire . Later he went to Issoudun and came to boxing there through a friend. He became a member of the Isoldunois boxing club and was trained by Michel Thoraud. As an amateur boxer, he achieved some good results and was about to join the French national team. But he made a different decision and switched to professional boxers.

He lived as a professional mainly in Paris and was inducted into the boxing stable of Jean Bretonnel. With one size he weighed about 65 kg and became a very powerful boxer who won more than half of his fights by knockout.

He played his first fight on October 24, 1964 in Saint-Nazaire in the super-lightweight, defeating his compatriot Jean Claude Lepolard on points. He suffered a bitter defeat on December 8, 1965 in Tours , when he had to accept a knockout defeat from his second-rate opponent Michel Bisseur.

Roger Zami overcame this defeat quickly and remained undefeated in the next 15 fights. On March 31, 1969, he played his first title fight in Paris. It was about the French championship in the super lightweight. The fight did not go well for Roger Zami, because he lost to the title holder René Roque by knockout. On January 12, 1970 he was then French champion in the super lightweight in Paris by a technical knockout victory over Baldassare Picone. On November 16, 1970 Roger Zami boxed again against René Roque in Paris. This time it was about the European title in the super lightweight and Roger Zami lost again, but this time only on points.

On April 3, 197 he defended in Fort-de-France by a technical knockout victory over Baldassare Picone and on November 6, 1971 in Lyon by another technical knockout victory over Maurice Tavant, the French championship title in super welterweight twice.

On February 28, 1972 Roger Zami was then in Paris with a points victory over the Italian Sandro Lopopolo European champion in the super lightweight. But he lost this title again on October 1, 1972, because he lost on points in Istanbul against the Turkish Cemal Kamaci boxing with an Austrian license . On April 7, 1973, he defended the French championship title in Dunkirk with a knockout victory over Bernard Creton again.

But he could not take the chance to become European champion in the super-lightweight again on April 20, 1974 in Barcelona in the fight against the Spaniard Antonio Ortiz . He lost this fight by technical knockout

Roger Zami played his last fight on August 17, 1974 in Johannesburg . He lost there against Kokkie Olivier, a South African, on points.

Roger Zami died on November 28, 1977 at the age of 36. In his honor, a football stadium was named after him in Le Gosier.
