René Roque (born October 15, 1941 in Alès , Gard , † July 11, 2006 in Nîmes ) was a French boxer . He was European champion of professional boxers in the super lightweight.
Career
After a short amateur period, René Roque became a professional boxer in 1963. His domicile was Lyon and his manager was Jean Bretonnel . He played his first fight on September 6, 1963 in Aosta , where he lost on points in the lightweight against the Italian Enrico Piccinelli. In the following two and a half years he fought many good fights against sometimes very strong opponents, of which he only lost two. He climbed to a top position in the French lightweight ranking. One of the opponents he lost to during this period was the Spaniard Pedro Carrasco , one of the strongest boxers in Europe in his weight class.
On March 11, 1967 René Roque was in Villeurbanne with a points victory over Jacques Kancellary French champion in the lightweight. His efforts to move forward in Europe were stopped on July 26, 1967 in Aberavon by the Scotsman Ken Buchanan , who clearly defeated him on points. René Roque was able to successfully defend the French lightweight championship title twice. On May 17, 1968, he boxed in Villeurbanne against Maurice Tavant in a draw and with the same result, his title defense against Leonard Tavarez ended on December 16, 1968 in Paris .
A few months later he voluntarily returned this title because he could no longer bring the weight. He fought for it on March 31, 1969 in Paris against Roger Zami for the French championship title in the super lightweight and won this fight by knockout
On April 22, 1970 René Roque was also European champion in this weight class in Montecatini Terme. He defeated the defending champion Sandro Lopopolo from Italy on points. However, many, mainly of course the Italian “boxing experts”, accused the Austrian referee Kurt Rado, who was authorized to make the sole decision, a wrong judgment. After this victory, René Roque appeared for the first time in June 1970 in the world rankings of boxing expert Nat Fleischer in the specialist magazine The Ring on rank 8 in the super lightweight.
Manager Jean Bretonnel, certainly one of the most capable boxing managers of those years, had managed a world championship fight (WBC) in Lignano for René Roque on July 10, 1970. The defending champion in the super lightweight was the Italian Bruno Arcari . In the third round of this fight, Arcari suffered a gaping eyebrow injury on his left eye in a confusing close combat situation. But he could continue boxing afterwards. On lap six, Rene Roque was headbutted and Arcari sustained an eyebrow injury to his right eye. On the advice of the ring doctor, who forbade Arcari to continue fighting, René Roque was then disqualified by referee Nello Martinelli. Outraged supporters of his then stormed the ring and it was finally René Roque himself who had a moderating effect on them and asked them to leave the ring again, which they then did ( Box Sport No. 29/30/1970, page 27) .
After this unfortunate fight, René Roque successfully defended his European title in the super-lightweight four times. On August 27, 1970, a draw against the Dane Borge Krogh was enough for him in Valby . On November 16, 1970, he defeated his compatriot Roger Zami on points in Paris . With the same result he won on December 27, 1970 in Lyon over the Italian Romano Fanoli and finally he fought in a draw on March 16, 1971 in Vienna against the Turkish Cemal Kamaci, who boxed with an Austrian license .
On May 21, 1971, he finally lost the European title to Pedro Carrasco in Madrid, against whom he had already lost in 1965. On June 17, 1972, he had another chance to become French super-lightweight champion. But he lost to Baldassare Picone on points. That was the last fight in his career.
