Rohana parisatis ( Syn .: Apatura parisatis ) is a butterfly ( butterflies )occurring in Asiafrom the family of the noble butterfly (Nymphalidae) in the subfamily of the Schiller butterfly (Apaturinae).

The wingspan of the moth is 50 to 55 mm. The species shows a distinct sexual dimorphism . In the male, the upper side of the wing is black-brown, only a few very small white spots stand out near the apex of the forewings. In females, yellow- brown colors dominate in the submarginal and post - disk regions and red-brown colors in the disk and basal regions . The undersides of the wings are marbled red-brown in the males, lightened in the edge area, similarly drawn in the females, but yellow-brown in color.

The caterpillars are green in color and have a very broad yellow topline that shows a large blue-green spot on each segment. Its two black antler-like headphones and one end of the body ending in a double point are striking.

The slightly curved doll shows a hump-like elevation in the middle. It is initially colored green and is attached to branches, trunks or leaves as a falling doll with a webbing anchorage. Shortly before the moths hatch, their colors shine through the pupa shell.

Distribution, subspecies and habitat

The species occurs in India , Sri Lanka , Thailand , Malaysia , Indonesia , Myanmar , Vietnam and in southern China . Ten subspecies are currently classified in the various occurrence areas . Rohana parisatis primarily inhabits moist deciduous forests, preferably at altitudes between 200 and 800 meters. The species was found in Sri Lanka at an altitude of 1,800 meters.

Way of life

The moths fly in successive generations. They like to stay in higher tree regions. While the females occasionally visit flowers, the males suckle on excrement or damp places on the ground in order to absorb fluids and minerals. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of preferably from Zürgelbaumarten ( Celtis ), for example of Celtis tetranda or Celtis lycodoxylon .

Hazard and protection

Rohana parisatis is not uncommon in most of its distribution areas and is therefore classified by the World Conservation Organization IUCN as " Least Concern = not endangered".
