The Rohrbuchbrücke is a 268 m long bridge on federal motorway 3 .

The structure is located in the Spessart between the Rohrbrunn and Marktheidenfeld junctions and spans the Rohrbuchtal with a forest path on the Rohrberg.

Building 1960

The overpass was built with two separate superstructures between 1959 and 1960. It had a maximum height of 37 m and five openings. The bridge was straight in plan. The longitudinal gradient was a constant 4% to the east with an outward transverse gradient of 1.5%.

Foundation and substructures

The abutments and pillars had a flat foundation . The four pairs of piers had a rectangular reinforced concrete hollow cross-section and were connected to each other at the pier heads by means of crossbars with concrete trussed girders .

Superstructures

The two adjacent superstructures of the prestressed concrete bridge were continuous girders with a hollow box cross-section and a constant construction height of 4.0 m. The prestressing consisted of internal tendons in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The floor slab was 7.6 m wide and a maximum of 40 cm thick over the pillar. The web thickness varied between 50 cm and 80 cm. Cross members were arranged in the middle of the field and above the support axes.

The span for the 5-span bridge was 47.0 m - 3 × 58 m - 47.0 m.

New building 2019

As part of the six-lane expansion of the motorway, the bridge was replaced by a new building that was erected south of the old bridge between September 2016 and November 2019. After the construction of the superstructure for the Würzburg carriageway on a ground-supported shoring , the traffic was relocated to this at the beginning of 2018, the old bridge was blown up on July 1, 2018 and then the second superstructure began. The blasting had to be postponed due to a colony of around 500 piped bats in one of the bridge piers. The total value of the construction contract was originally around € 12.3 million net.

The new bridge structure has six fields and a total length of 255 m. The spans are 36.50 m in the two end spans and 45.50 m in the four inner spans. Two-leg prestressed concrete slab beams with a constant construction height of 2.3 m are available as cross-sections . The Frankfurt lane has a total width of 19.05 m, the Würzburg lane 17.55 m. Y-shaped, massive pillars with a bored pile foundation support the bridges.
