A pipe protection cover , also known as a heat protection cover , is a component of a cannon or a gun that is used to increase the accuracy of the hit.

function

Under the influence of one-sided heat or cold  - for example, solar radiation or wind and rain - the material of the gun barrels of tanks or other guns can deform slightly. Since even a minimal deformation of a line at the muzzle at a target distance of 2000 meters leads to a hit deposition of two meters, a protective pipe cover is an inexpensive and effective method to prevent this deposition of hits caused by external influences.

Executions

Initially, gun barrels were wrapped with insulating material. More modern constructions use protective covers made of aluminum or glass fiber reinforced plastic . The air remaining in the space provides insulation and heat balance.
