Pipe weaving

The craft of pipe weaving has a millennia-old tradition in the Havel area . The material for weaving was reed harvested in the vicinity of the Havelsee on the river and the Pritzerber See , from which, for example, reed mats are woven. What was made entirely by hand in earlier centuries could later be made using special looms. The special looms still used in the Pritzerbe pipe weaving mill were purchased in 1945 by the owner and manager Georg Wellendorf, who also acquired the town's former rifle house as a new facility that year.

After Georg Wellendorf's death in 1980, Gerhard Krüger continued to run the Pritzerbe pipe weaving mill until 1998. He then sold the company building to the still independent town of Pritzerbe. The tube looms were sold to a Lehniner institute for further training, which had previously operated the tube weaving mill. The Lehniner Institute for Continuing Education leased the building from the city, while Pritzerbe received a right of first refusal on the looms. Since 2001, the Potsdam-Mittelmark Labor and Training Association has been operating tube weaving as the successor to the Institute for Continuing Education and marketing its products.

Since the reed belt around the city is particularly protected today, the raw material has recently been grown and harvested on the reed mill's own fields. Species of the Miscanthus , also known as pedunculate flower grass, are mainly used because they are particularly suitable due to their robustness and ease of care.

museum

In October 2013, a museum was opened in the pipe weaving mill, which in an exhibition deals not only with craft but also with local history. The museum is open to the public on weekends when the workshop is off, and the workshop is open to visitors during the week.
