Roland Gohlke

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roland S. Gohlke (born November 29, 1929 in Alpena (Michigan) , † November 9, 2000 in Port Charlotte ) was a pioneer of mass spectrometry .

Live and act

Gohlke graduated in 1952 with an M.Sc. graduated from the University of Michigan . In the following years Gohlke and Fred McLafferty at Dow Chemical used a mass spectrometer as a detector for a chromatography method for the first time. Both coupled a gas chromatograph with a mass spectrometer. This method made it possible for the first time to separate and identify substance mixtures in a plant. At Dow, Gohlke and Horst Langer also developed the coupling of differential thermal analysis ( English differential scanning calorimetry ) with mass spectrometry. Together with McLafferty he developed the firstMS spectra libraries for mass spectrometry. Gohlke was involved in the development of the Finnigan 3000 at the mass spectrometer manufacturer Finnigan Instruments from 1968 to 1970 . He then moved to Eastman Kodak's mass spectrometry division and retired in 1987.

He was married to Jeane Anderson and had four children.

honors and awards

  • 2019 The American Chemical Society awarded Gohlke and McLafferty a National Historic Chemical Landmark for creating the first working GC-MS in Midland, Michigan.
