Roland Merten

Roland Merten (born March 29, 1960 in Schmelz ) is a German scientist and political official . From November 2009 to December 2014 he was State Secretary in the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture .

Life and work

Merten studied at the Kiel University of Applied Sciences until 1982 , where he graduated with a degree in social education. He then moved to the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences , where he became a qualified social worker in 1987. In the following years he studied educational science, philosophy and sociology at the University of Trier , the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the University of Bielefeld , where Merten graduated in 1989 with a diploma in education and in 1990 with a Magister Artium in philosophy.

He then worked as a research assistant or assistant at universities in Bremen, Berlin, Bielefeld, Friborg (in Switzerland), Trier, Erfurt and Halle-Wittenberg. In 1996 he was awarded a doctorate in educational science in Bielefeld. phil. PhD. The habilitation took place in 2003 at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .

From 2004 Merten worked as a university professor for social education at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena , and in 2006 he received a W3 professorship for life. In 2005 he was appointed professeur associé at the Université du Luxembourg . From 2007 to 2009 he was director of the Institute for Educational Science in Jena, then deputy director of the institute until his appointment as State Secretary. Since April 1, 2018 he has been director of the Institute for Educational Science again.

On November 4, 2009, Roland Merten became one of the two state secretaries in the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, led by Christoph Matschie ( SPD ). As head of office, Roland Merten succeeded Kjell Eberhardt and was responsible for the central department for the departments of fundamental matters for education and schools , general schools, vocational schools and the school network, real estate and international affairs . The remaining departments were subordinate to State Secretary Thomas Deufel . With the swearing-in of the Ramelow I cabinet on December 5, 2014, Roland Merten resigned from office.
