Thomas Deufel

Thomas Deufel (born March 1, 1954 in Abensberg ) is a German scientist and political official . From 1996 to 2009 he was professor and institute director at Jena University Hospital , from 2009 to 2014 State Secretary in the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture and from 2014 to 2016 State Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Further Education and Culture of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate .

Life and work

Deufel grew up in Munich and attended the Wittelsbacher Gymnasium there from 1964 to 1971 . He then studied chemistry and medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU) until 1980 , completed his medical studies with the state examination and received his license to practice medicine. In 1981 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD, in 1993 the habilitation to Dr. med. habil. in clinical chemistry and pathobiochemistry.

From 1980 to 1983 and from 1985 to 1988 Deufel worked as an assistant doctor at the Munich-Schwabing Municipal Hospital . In the meantime he spent as a DAAD scholarship holder at the Hagedorn Forskningslaboratorium of Novo Nordisk Stiftelse in Gentofte (Denmark). From 1989 to 1991 he worked in the clinical chemistry and biochemistry department of Dr. von Hauner Children's Hospital of Munich University Hospital , then he moved to a C3 professor of Clinical Chemistry / metabolic analysis at the Center for Pediatrics at the Hospital of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . Deufel was chairman of the Ernst Abbe Foundation in Jena from 2014 to 2020 . In this function he is also a member of the board of trustees of the German Optical Museum Foundation . Deufel has been living in a civil partnership since 2001 and has been married since 2018. He lives in Berlin and Athens.
