Walter Bauer-Wabnegg
Walter Bauer-Wabnegg (born April 13, 1954 in Straubing ) is a German media scientist. He has been President of the University of Erfurt since 2014 .
Life
After graduating from Melanchthon High School in Nuremberg , Bauer-Wabnegg studied language and literature , theology and philosophy in Erlangen and Freiburg im Breisgau from 1974 , where he graduated with a Magister Artium . He then worked as a research assistant at the Franz Kafka Archive in Wuppertal , Freiburg and Oxford , before writing a dissertation on circus and artists in Franz Kafka's work in 1985 : A contribution on the body and literature in the age of technology to the Dr. phil. received his doctorate . After initial professional experience in media and agency work, Bauer-Wabnegg became a lecturer at the CH Beck publishing house in Munich in 1988 . Subsequently, from 1989 onwards he worked as a freelance media consultant and communication designer with a teaching position for new media at the University of Munich and attracted attention through numerous thematic lectures and publications. In 1992 he founded the media agency medien | design in Nuremberg , from which he retired around 2000 due to his academic obligations.
Bauer-Wabnegg became professor for media theory / media practice in the visual communication course at the FH Aachen in 1993 , where he played a key role in developing the media design course. In 1997 he came to the Bauhaus University Weimar as a substitute for a professor and was then appointed full professor for multimedia storytelling in 1999. The council of the university elected him on May 16, 2001 with 50 votes in favor, six against and two abstentions as the new university rector ; the inauguration took place on June 26, 2001. From 2004 to 2009 he was State Secretary in the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. After his return from politics, he became a professor at the Bauhaus University again.
Bauer-Wabnegg was elected as the new President of the University on May 22, 2014 by the University Council of the University of Erfurt with five to two votes after the initially elected Hans Vorländer did not accept the election. In October 2014 he succeeded Kai Brodersen , who for health reasons did not run for another term. The decisive factors for the vote were Bauer-Wabnegg's excellent knowledge of the Thuringian university landscape, his versatility in nationwide scientific matters and his many years of experience in university management positions. In December 2018 he was re-elected for a further term.
Walter Bauer-Wabnegg is married.
politic and economy
For the election of the German Federal President in 2004 , Bauer-Wabnegg was a member of the 12th Federal Assembly for the CDU on May 23, 2004 . In July of the same year, following the state elections in Thuringia in 2004, he was appointed State Secretary in the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. There he was responsible for the departments science, universities and research , art and culture as well as real estate, international affairs . After the state elections in Thuringia in 2009 and the formation of the new state government , Christoph Matschie ( SPD ) took over the office of Minister of Education. Roland Merten and Thomas Deufel were appointed as new state secretaries, so Bauer-Wabnegg left office on November 4, 2009.
Evidently, in December 2004 at least, Bauer-Wabnegg was also head of the supervisory board of Kulturstadt Weimar GmbH and, in his function as state secretary, automatically also chairman of the administrative board of the Jena University Hospital . After leaving politics, he tried - while still in the office of clinic director - to get a consulting contract with the Jena University Hospital, negotiated with Rudolf Kruse (commercial director) and Klaus Höffken (medical director). However, he withdrew this request after press reports and interventions by Matschies and Prime Minister Christine Lieberknecht . In May 2010, there were also allegations that Bauer-Wabnegg had exercised his influence in the appointment of the then still incumbent hospital division manager for human resources management and that in January 2009, despite the lack of qualifications and specialist skills, he only helped the applicant to the job on the basis of personal friendship. He denied this allegation.
