The University of Luxembourg ( Université du Luxembourg in French ) was founded in 2003 and is divided into three locations: Esch-Belval , Kirchberg and Limpertsberg . The administration of the university and a large part of the institutes have been located on the former Esch-Belval conversion site since 2015 .

prehistory

Research and teaching at university level existed in Luxembourg even before the university was founded.

Engineering training has been offered at the Institut Supérieur De Technologie (IST) since 1916 . In 2003, the IST moved into engineering as part of the FSTC faculty, making it the oldest part of the university. This research group produced the university's first doctoral student.

The Center Universitaire de Luxembourg (CUNLUX) comprised a Département des Lettres & des Sciences Humaines , a Philosophical Seminar, a Seminar Ancient Studies, a Seminar Medieval History ( Michel Margue ), a Seminar Modern History ( Jean-Paul Lehners ), a Seminar Contemporary History ( Gilbert Trausch ), a seminar ISIS (Interdépendances des sociétés, interaction des sciences), a seminar CERF ( Center d'Etudes et de Recherches Francophones ), a linguistic seminar, a seminar in English Studies and an American Studies Center .

“The remarkable achievement of medieval research, for example, which the Center Luxembourgeois de Documentation et d'Etudes médievales (CLUDEM) has to show and which all too often made the name of the CUNLux known in the first place at foreign universities, or the colloquia that the SEMANT (Seminaire d'Études Anciennes), founded by Charles-Marie Ternes in the field of ancient history, has been organized for historians and archaeologists for years, has in fact received less attention in Luxembourg than abroad. After all, the CLUDEM received the Lions Prize in Luxembourg in 1997. "

The primary school teacher training was carried out by the Institut Supérieur d'Études et de Recherches Pédagogiques (ISERP) in Walferdingen . IEES served to train graduate educators. Technological research was carried out by the Institut Supérieur de technologies (IST).

The University of Luxembourg replaces these institutions and is legally their successor.

Key data

The first rector was the French-Canadian professor François Tavenas (1942–2004). The Spanish physicist of German descent Rolf Tarrach (* 1948 in Valencia ) was rector from 2005 to 2015 . Rainer Klump took over this position on January 15, 2015 . On January 1, 2018, Stéphane Pallage from Malmedy took up the position of the university's new rector.

The university is internationally oriented. Bachelor students must spend at least one semester abroad. The university cooperates with numerous universities in Europe and overseas for teaching programs and student exchanges. Lectures are usually held in two languages - depending on the course in English and German, French and German or English and French. To make it easier to get started, the university organizes foreign language courses for students.

The 6,157 students come from 107 countries, the 233 lecturers from 25 countries. The enrollment fee is usually 200 euros per semester; the semester ticket has been included since August 2017 and is valid "without restriction" throughout Luxembourg. Enrollments for the winter semester are possible from July to September, for the summer semester in January and February.

In the international ranking of Times Higher Education (THE), the university regularly ranks among the top 200, and among young universities (under 20 years of age) it is always at the top.

Faculties and courses of study

The teaching programs are consistently based on the Bologna system and are geared to the interests of young people and the needs of the labor market. Students can currently choose from eleven Bachelor's and 23 Master's programs .

  • The Faculty of Science, Technology, and Communication offers bachelor's degrees in engineering, computer science, and life sciences, as well as four master's programs in engineering (mechanical engineering, civil engineering, energy efficiency, environmental science), one master's degree in information & computer sciences, and another in integrated systems biology.
  • The Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance focuses on business administration and economics, law and business informatics in the bachelor's degree programs. The master’s courses focus on banking and finance, European law, entrepreneurship and innovation, and data security management.
  • The Faculty of Linguistics and Literature, Humanities, Art and Education offers bachelor's degrees in the fields of Education and Social Sciences, Psychology and European Cultures. The master’s courses range from philosophy, psychology and European history to mediation and gerontology, cross-border communication and cooperation to a master’s degree in sustainable European spatial development and the “master’s degree in learning and development in multilingual and multicultural contexts”. New are a Master in European Governance and an “Erasmus Mundus” Master in German and French philosophy in Europe.

research

Research is one of the core competencies of the University of Luxembourg. Research at the institution deliberately focuses on a limited number of scientific areas that are considered to be of priority. The following five areas will have the highest priority until 2013:

  • International finance
  • Information technology security and reliability
  • Systems biomedicine
  • European and commercial law
  • Education and learning in a multilingual and multicultural context

Further research focuses are:

  • Interface-induced properties in condensed matter
  • Luxembourg studies
  • Environmental resources, technologies and changes
  • Economy and Entrepreneurship
  • Social and individual development
  • mathematics
  • European governance

The Laboratoire de linguistique et de littératures luxembourgeoises deals with linguistic and literary aspects of Luxembourgish in the context of multilingualism. It was founded in September 2006 and is part of the interdisciplinary Unité de Recherche IPSE. The national identity of Luxembourgers is largely defined by Luxembourgish as the national language; this is the result of a new scientific publication.

In December 2009 the “Luxemburg Atlas” was published. In almost 100 contributions by more than 70 authors from science and practice, diverse topics are presented in maps, aerial photographs and photos as well as with German and French texts.

On December 17, 2009, the university signed partnership agreements with the Technical University of Berlin , the TU Darmstadt and the TU Dresden . The first joint research project with the TU Dresden will be in the field of plastics technology . A project in the field of computer security is planned with the TU Darmstadt . In September 2009, an agreement between the was the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Luxembourg Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR) made for cooperation in basic research.

As a rule, Luxembourg labor law only recognizes open-ended employment contracts. The fact that the university has been granted some exceptions to this principle by law has led to a legal dispute in the case of assistant professor Gudrun Ziegler, the outcome of which is expected to result in greater legal certainty.
